How long did it take you to get your black belt?

Quite awhile! I started training in 1996. I got to red tag in 1998 then I took a break after injuring my knee doing my day job! I finally got round to starting back in 2002 and finally received my black belt in October 2003, I then received my Second Degree black belt in October 2005. So in total 6 years, 8 if you include my Second degree!!!

What happens if you fail a grading?

Your instructor will sit down with you and explain what the problem was and will sort out how he or she can help you in future lessons. You will be encouraged to continue with training and to re-take the grading next time round.

Taekwondo is in the Olympics isn't it?

Yes. However, its a different style to White Tigers. The style practiced at the Olympics is called WTF and the style we teach at White Tigers is based on the ITF. The main difference is that WTF is full contact and requires body armour, ITF is semi-contact and requires only hand, feet, shin and head guards, plus men require a groin guard. There are other differences mainly in the patterns but if you have any other questions on this subject please feel free to e-mail me.

Can girls do Taekwondo as well?

Absolutely!! In my opinion as a female instructor, which of course is totally biased, I believe girls are naturally better at any martial art they choose to do!!!!!!

How old do you have to be to do Taekwondo?

As a general rule, over 6 years of age but we do make exceptions in some cases.

Am I too old to start training?

You are never too old!!

How much does it cost?

The first month of training is free, if you decide to continue with your training, then its £25 a month.

What about the training suits (doboks) do you have to have one straight away?

No. There is no need to buy a dobok until after your first grading which is usually up to four months or more away.

What do I learn in the lessons?

Patterns, sparring, self defence, a small amount of Korean language and eventually board breaking.

How long does it take to get to Black Belt?

This depends on the individual, if you take every grading each time it comes round, then it takes about 3 years. Many people take longer, for many different reasons.

Do I have to spar (fight)?

No. We never force anyone to spar unless they enjoy it but eventually you are required to spar during gradings.
